Ten Indians ruling the world

A story is told of an argument between US President Donald Trump, Russia’s Vladmir Putin and their Chinese counterpart Xi Jiping, over who was in charge of the world; America, Russia or China? Without any conclusion, they turned to India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an answer. Modi’s reply confounded them by naming 10 out of a long list of Indians who were at the helm of the world’s leading companies and institutions. Below are some of the top Indians who rule the world.

Alphabet Inc.

Pichai Sundararajan is an Indian-American business executive and chief executive officer of Alphabet Inc. and its subsidiary Google LLC. Born in Madurai, India, 48 year old Pichai earned his degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in metallurgical engineering.

Alphabet is the world’s fourth-largest technology company by revenue and one of the world’s most valuable companies and employs 123,048 (Q1 2020).

By 2019, Alphabet’s revenue was $161.8 billion with a net income of $34.3 billion, commanding a total asset base of $275.9 billion in the year under review.

Microsoft

Satya Narayan Nadella succeeded Steve Ballmer in 2014 as Microsoft boss. Before becoming chief executive, he was the executive vice president of Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise group, responsible for building and running the company’s computing platforms. He was born on August 19, 1967 in Hyderabad, India.

The 53 year old’s net worth is $387 million. Microsoft was was founded on April 4, 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen and has its headquarters in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States and has a revenue base of $143 billion (2020).

Diageo

Ivan Manuel Menezes is an Indian-American business executive. He has been the chief executive officer of Diageo, a FTSE 100 British multinational alcoholic beverages company, since 1 July 2013, having succeeded Paul S. Walsh.

Diageo plc is a British multinational beverage alcohol company, with its headquarters in London, England.

They operate in more than 180 countries and produce in more than 140 sites around the world.

It was the world’s largest distiller until being overtaken by China’s Kweichow Moutai on 9 April 2017.

Founded on December 17, 1997 Diageo employs 28,420 people and has revenues in excess of £12.8 billion.

Reckitt Benckiser

Laxman Narasimhan took over the helm of the Anglo-Dutch multinational consumer goods company on September 1, 2019, having previously been chief commercial officer at PepsiCo.

Reckitt Benckiser Group plc/N.V. is an Anglo-Dutch multinational consumer goods company headquartered in Slough, England, and Hoofddorp, Schiphol, Netherlands. It is a producer of health, hygiene and home products.

Founded by Isaac Reckitt, Jeremiah Colman and Johann Benckiser, the company employs 40,000. By last year, its revenues topped £12.85 billion.

Novartis

Vasant Narasimhan is an Indian-American physician and the chief executive officer of Novartis.

Novartis International AG is a Swiss multinational pharmaceutical company based in Basel, Switzerland.

It is majority owned by American shareholders and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies by both market capitalization and sales.

By 2018, its revenues stood at $51.9 billion with a workforce of 125,161 (2017).

Britain’s Chancellor

Rishi Sunak is the United Kingdom’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, or simply the Chancellor.

As the Chancellor, he is a high ranking Minister of the Crown within the Government of the United Kingdom, and head of Her Majesty’s Treasury.

As one of the four Great Offices of State, the Chancellor is a senior member of the British Cabinet.

A member of the ruling conservative party, Sunak took over the office in February 2020, after previously serving as Chief Secretary to the Treasury under Chancellor Sajid Javid from July 2019 to February 2020.

Britain’s Home Secretary

The current Secretary of State for the Home Department is Priti Patel, MP, who was appointed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in July 2019.

Just like the Chancellor, the Secretary of State for the Home Department, also referred to as the Home Secretary, is a senior Minister of the Crown within the Government of the United Kingdom, and head of the Home Office.

As one of the four Great Offices of State, the Home Secretary is a senior member of the British Cabinet.

Micron

Sanjay Mehrotra is an Indian American business executive. He is the current Chief Executive Officer of Micron Technology.

Previously, he co-founded SanDisk, where he served as president and CEO until its acquisition by Western Digital in 2016.

Micron Technology, Inc. is an American producer of computer memory and computer data storage including dynamic random-access memory, flash memory, and USB flash drives.

It is headquartered in Boise, Idaho. Its consumer products are marketed under the brands Crucial and Ballistix.

Adobe

Shantanu Narayen is the chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Adobe Inc. Prior to this, he was the president and chief operating officer since 2005.

Adobe Inc. is an American multinational computer software company. Incorporated in Delaware and headquartered in San Jose, California, it has historically focused upon the creation of multimedia and creativity software products, with a more recent foray towards digital marketing software. Revenues $1.17 billion (2019)

IBM

Born in Dehradun, India Arvind Krishna began his career at IBM as an engineer in IBM Research, was promoted to senior vice president in 2015, and eventually took the mantle of the American multinational technology company headquartered in Armonk, New York in April 2020.

IBM was founded in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company and was renamed “International Business Machines” in 1924.

It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange with a stock price of $122.59 and revenues in excess of $77 billion (2019).
