Kikuyu Member of Parliament (MP) and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah has asked President William Ruto to make changes to the governorship position.

Addressing a crowd on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, Ichung'wah proposed that the county governor position be reserved exclusively for women.

According to Ichung'wah, the proposal if implemented would benefit counties because women governors are best at their jobs and perform better than their male counterparts.

"Kama itafika siku uweze kubadilisha katiba, naona uibadilishe kiti ya governor kua ya hawa wamama kwa sababu wao ndio wanaelewa hii kazi ya governor," he stated.

In the most recent survey, a section of female governors ranked among the top ten best-performing governors in the country.

According to the survey by Infotrak in November last year, female governors such as Homa Bay governor Gladys Wanga topped the list of the top 25 best-performing governors as the best-performing governor in the country with 70 per cent.

Other governors such as Kawira Mwangaza (Meru) ranked eighth with 63%. In contrast, Cecily Mbarire (Embu) ranked 11th with 62 per cent, Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos) ranked 13th with 61 per cent, whereas Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru emerged 17th in the list with 59 per cent.

The survey was conducted in two phases between July and September 2023.

During the first survey, 36,200 participants were involved whereas the second survey involved 22,500 participants.

"The second survey involving 22,500 participants was conducted to boost the sample size so that each subcounty had at least 200 respondents," the survey stated.
