Former Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eugene Wamalwa now says the Kenya Kwanza administration faces a declining favorability in the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking to the press on Monday, June 5, 2023, Wamalwa opined that Ruto’s government is losing massive support from the traditional political stronghold that steered his victory in the 2022 general elections.

"It's not a secret that the Kenya Kwanza regime is losing the support of the Mt Kenya region day by day and they are aware of it," he stated.

This comes amid economic discontent and frustration with President William Ruto owing to the rising cost of living and the ongoing discourse about the Finance Bill 2023.

Speaking of the Finance Bill, the opposition led by Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua claimed that a number of tax measures in the Bill are targeted at Mt Kenya businesses.

In a statement, the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party co-principal accused the Kenya Kwanza regime of plotting to undermine the Mt Kenya region both politically and economically to ensure that there is no significant political competition from the region.

"Many of the tax measures contained in the Finance Bill are unreasonable and clearly directed not only at the nation but particularly at Mt Kenya businesses," Karua said.
