Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga has called out President William Ruto's administration for 'burdening' Kenyans with high taxes.

Speaking on Thursday, February 9, 2023, the former prime minister claimed that Kenyans were now working to pay taxes despite the high costs of living.

While condemning the Kenya Kwanza administration, Raila pointed out that the taxation policies were currently accounting for half the prices of commodities, a move that was straining Kenyans' pockets.

He additionally underscored that the ruling government was inconsiderate of Kenyans who were struggling to keep up with the lean times.

"Kenyans now work for taxes, tax now comprises close to half the price of goods our people buy. Kenyans need justice on taxation and we are the only people to take up on that battle," he said.

"We must force and end taxation policies that place heavier tax burdens on the middle class and the extreme poor," he added.

Further, Raila affirmed that the opposition will lead Kenyans in demanding social and economic justice that will foresee that they have access to jobs, a fair minimum wage, free education for all, and the abolition of punitive taxes.

"We cannot accept as normal that millions of our people have nothing to eat and that their poverty is weaponised and politicised to give legitimacy to a rudderless and legitimate regime," Raila added.
