Former Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana has announced his retirement from elective politics after serving since 2002.

He announced the decision via his official social media platforms.

"Today I announced that I have quit elective politics after serving the people of Makueni Constituency (2002-2007) & Makueni County (2013-2022), and 30 years of other public services. Thanks be to God, my former students, co-workers, and those I serve," he wrote.

The politician who was born in 1954 attended Nduundune Primary School before joining Machakos School for his secondary education.

He later joined the University of Nairobi in 1976 where he acquired his Bachelor's degree in Law and his Master's. He has also been schooled in prestigious educational institutions like the University of London, George Washington University and Harvard University.

He is married to his wife Nazi Kivutha who is a Counseling Psychologist by profession.

Political career

Kivutha Kibwana first acted as the National Convention Executive council spokesperson from 1997 to 2002 while still being an associate professor at the University of Nairobi.

In 2002, he became an MP for the Makueni constituency and Minister of Land, Settlements Environment & Natural Resources.

He was later appointed by then President Mwai Kibaki as Presidential Advisor for Constitutional, Parliamentary and Youth Affairs in the President's Office from January 2008 to September 2012.

In 2013, Prof. Kibwana was elected as the first governor of Makueni county under the Muungano Development Movement Party where he was the leader.

His first tenure was marred with disputes with the majority of Wiper members of the Makueni County Assembly and almost resigned from the position.

A petition was filed to suspend Makueni County but the immediate former President Uhuru Kenyatta intervened and saved his career.

In 2017, he joined the Wiper Party and clinched the seat again.

This time, Kibwana was appointed chairman of the Wiper Democratic Movement Party however one year later, Kibwana fell out with Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

In August 2022, Kivutha Kibwana joined President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza as part of his legal team following the presidential election petition.

"We associate with the leadership that Kivutha Kibwana has manifested in agreeing to work with us in furthering our country’s development agenda. The Makueni Governor will join the Kenya Kwanza legal team in the ongoing presidential election petition," he wrote.

Ruto further stated that Kibwana had defected to the Kenya Kwanza camp.

"At the Karen residence, welcomed Kivutha Kibwana to Kenya Kwanza accompanied by other leaders," he wrote.
