Police must maintain order during protests

Residents of Kisii town yesterday joined in the protests called by the Azimio leader Raila Odinga over the high cost of living.

The protesters who were carrying sufurias while chanting anti-government slogans engaged police in running battles for the better part of the day, disrupting normal business.

Evans Okeri, a protester, urged president William Ruto’s government to reduce the price of basic goods to ease the suffering of the majority of poor Kenyans.

“We call on the government to address concerns being raised by Azimio la umoja leaders- Raila Odinga (ODM), Martha Karua ( Narc-K) and Kalonzoh Musyoka ( Wiper) which affect poor Kenyans,” Okeri said.

He noted that the on-going protests will scare away investors and challenged the president, church leaders and the Azimio leaders to engage in dialogue to end the stalemate.

And former South West Kenya Law Society of Kenya (LSK) chairman, Wilkins Ochoki urged security officers not to use excessive force to disperse protesters, saying it will cause more damage.
