1,048 rescued from flooded Baringo South

Following rescue missions by a multi-agency team, a total of 1,048 people have been rescued from Baringo South, which was marooned by floodwater.

The operations, involving the Kenya Red Cross, National and County Governments, Savage Wilderness, and community members, successfully rescued 732 individuals in a later operation on Sunday, adding to the 316 rescued earlier.

The evacuation efforts focused on Longeiwan, Sintaan, and Eldume in Baringo South.

Although significant progress has been made, some individuals are still stranded in Sintaan, with ongoing preparations to evacuate them.

"In the last two days, 1,048 people from Longeiwan, Sintaan, and Eldume in Baringo South have been successfully evacuated to safety as of yesterday evening," Kenya Red Cross announced.

"However, there are still others marooned in Sintaan, Baringo South, and preparations are underway to evacuate them as well," the statement said.

Over the weekend, 101 people were rescued on Saturday, followed by 215 on Sunday morning.

To address the needs of the displaced, the government said it had established 138 camps across 18 counties, providing temporary shelter and essential supplies to 62,061 people from 14,771 households affected by the floods.

Plans are underway to set up additional camps as heavy rains persist.The government emphasizes its commitment to supporting the displaced until conditions improve and calls upon citizens to unite in assisting those affected by the floods.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura also acknowledged the support from the United Arab Emirates and appealed to friends of Kenya and development partners to join in assisting the nation during this challenging period.
