Big rush to beat college deadline as portal closes
It was a last-minute rush yesterday as the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination candidates raced to beat the deadline to revise their university and college choices.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha last month directed Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to open its system for candidates to revise their choices, in preparation for the next intake in September.
The portal opened on May 20 and was to run until June 2.
“All the 144,466 Kenyans with C+ and above who sat the 2021 KCSE exam are eligible to apply for degree programmes in the 70 universities,” said Magoha.
Collate data
KUCCPS will then collate the data and place the students. Only those who apply through the portal will be considered for government sponsorship.
Magoha also urged eligible candidates to consider applying for courses in TVET institutions and teacher training colleges.
Last year, over 6,000 people who qualified for degree courses opted for diplomas. Another 671,415 with grades ranging from C– (minus) to E in 2021 KCSE exams are eligible for diploma, craft, and artisan courses in 190 government institutions. The minimum entry requirement for diploma courses is C– , for craft certificate courses it is D (plain) and for artisan certificate courses, it is E.
For the first time, KUCCPS will be admitting students to 32 government primary teacher training colleges. All current and past eligible students can apply.
