Bungoma County is bracing itself to receive President William Ruto for the Madaraka day celebrations on June 1. Yesterday, local leaders hailed the head of state for revitalising the Matulo Airstrip in Webuye town ahead of his tour of the county in June.

Led by the area MCA Stephen Kaiser, the leaders said the airstrip’s refurbishment will enhance connectivity and boost economic activities in the region.

“We as residents of Webuye town are very grateful for this initiative that is part of the 30 per cent pact promised to the residents by president William Ruto during the 2022 general election campaign,” said Kaiser.

Speaking after touring the airstrip with other Bungoma leaders, Kaiser said the airstrip will boost economic activities in the region.

Key role

Kaiser thanked the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, for ensuring the realisation of the pledge.  “We as Bungoma residents who played a key role in the establishment of this government also want to thank Speaker Wetang’ula for the many appointments of Bungoma County residents to key positions such as Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, and ambassadors, things that we had been promised during campaigns,” he said.

Already, the government is constructing more than 600kms of roads in Bungoma county to open up the region and connect it with neighbouring counties and the region ahead of the national celebrations.

The Ministry of Roads and Transport through, Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA), is building 336.8kilometres.

Among the roads includes the maintenance of Mayoni-Bungoma (Kanduyi) (B139) Road; Kapsokwony-Kaptama (B13) Road, Bungoma -Chwele (B142) Road, Webuye -Kitale (A1) Road, Namwela- Kamukuywa (B142) Road.
