Chart political future ahead of ’22, Kiunjuri tells Mt Kenya leaders

Agriculture Cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has claimed that members of the Kikuyu community will be elbowed out of national political leadership unless leaders from the region amicably chart the region’s political future.

Speaking during the coronation of revered Peter Mwikimu at Kabiruini PCEA Church in Mathira, Kiunjuri said divisions being witnessed based on 2022 politics will render the region politically irrelevant. He warned that this may lead to eventual fragmentation of votes come 2022.  

“What is happening in Mt Kenya region is akin to what happened before the fall of the Roman Empire, where sub-tribes started threatening each other resulting in self-destruction just like what we hear every day about Tanga Tanga and Kieleweke factions. These fights must be put to an end,’’ he said.

The CS’s remarks come at times when political temperatures are steadily rising between the two groups allying themselves to either Deputy President William Ruto and the Handshake pioneered by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Oppostion chief Raila Odinga.

Several rallies in Murang’a and Nyeri counties have been disrupted by rowdy youths from the opposing camps. 

Without mentioning names, Kiunjuri warned those dividing the people of Mt Kenya region to stop immediately, noting that the locals were in dire need of development.

“Even if we have to vote in someone from another region, we will have to enter into some sort of memorandum of understanding,” he said.  

Kieni MP Kanini Kega and Nyeri Woman Representative Rahab Mukami said it was high time political leaders from the region united for prosperity.
