Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today's happenings.

Eyes on KMPDU, government over strike

Eyes will be on the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU), the Council of Governors, and the national government to see whether they will strike a deal to end the ongoing go-slow after an order by the court.

The parties in the dispute were directed by Employment and Labour Relations Court Judge Justice Byrum Ongaya to have a deal by the afternoon of Tuesday, May 7, 2024, or else the court will intervene.

“I hereby direct that all the parties involved must convene a meeting urgently and agree on the return to work formulae by Wednesday at 2.30 p.m., to which this court would have no option other than making the decision,” Justice Ongaya directed.

Flood

The updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department are also going to dominate the headlines, given the ongoing heavy rains.

The rains have caused floods that have resulted in the displacement of people, injuries and deaths, and destruction.

With calls urging President William Ruto to declare the floods a national menace, eyes will be on the Head of State to see whether he will act on those calls.

On Sunday, Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi urged Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to tell the president to declare the menace a national tragedy.

Champions League action

The Champions League football returns this week, with both semi-finals being in the balance heading into the second legs.

On May 7, German side Borussia Dortmund take 1-0 lead to Paris Saint-Germain. This fixture is no stranger to surprising results given that in 2020, Dortmund took a 2-1 lead into the second leg of their last-16 tie, only to lose 2-0 in Paris.

In the quarterfinal, PSG were beaten away by Barcelona, only for them to turn the tide and win by a margin of 4-1 at home to reach the penultimate stage.

According to Opta, PSG are the favourites to win on the night against Borussia Dortmund, with the hosts succeeding in 60.6% of pre-match simulations by the Opta supercomputer.

The French giants could become the first side to lose the first leg in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals of a UEFA Champions League campaign and still progress to the final.
