City Stars maintain momentum as Stima throw away big lead
Nairobi City Stars continued with their good run in the Betika Super League after humbling Vihiga Bullets 2-0 to move to 49 points in the standings.
The Kawangware-based side scored through Oliver Maloba and newcomer Ezekiel Odera to keep their march to the Kenyan Premier League on.
City Stars had almost 70 per cent of possession but failed to convert their numerous chances with Bullets, handled by veteran tactician Edward Manoah, lacking purpose upfront with very few threats from their forwards throughout the match.
Despite the win, City Stars coach Sanjin Alagic warned his players against complacency with 16 matches still to play.
“It is still far but at least we are getting the job done. My priority is to see the team be consistent because everybody wants to play and beat us so we have to do our homework right,” said Alagic, whose side lead the 19-team log.
In another enticing clash at Camp Toyoyo grounds, fourth-placed Nairobi Stima threw away their chance to narrow the gap with the top two after drawing 2-2 with Kenya Police.
The first half was entirely Stima’s, as the team, who have accumulated 36 points, led 2-0 only for the law enforcers to draw level in the second half courtesy of two exquisite goals.
Stima, however, still have a game in hand over their rivals but coach Leonard Odipo is not happy of the team’s attitude.
“The players thought they had won in the first half when the match is 90 minutes.
We just did not go as per instructions and so we had to pay the price,” Odipo told People Sport after the match.
Second-placed Bidco United came from behind to beat Migori Youth 2-1 at Awendo Stadium to move seven points behind leaders City Stars.
Meanwhile, Coast Stima have jumped to fifth on the log with 32 points without kicked a ball following Mt Kenya United’s failure to show up at Mbaraki Sports Club while Shabana picked three points away to Murang’a Seal following a 2-1 victory.
