Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya claims  he is most suited to lead and unite Mt Kenya ahead of the polls next year.

Speaking at Meru ASK Showground in Imenti North on Monday, Munya said the region need a leader who has the interest of the majority at heart and not personal political gain.

Accompanied by East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Mpuru Aburi, the CS said nothing will stop him from fighting for the unity of the region to increase the bargaining power in the next formation.

“During the Sagana two, leaders including governors from the region met with president Uhuru Kenyatta and succession politics featured and the head of state urged leaders to talk to me (Munya) on the way forward of the mountain,” added Munya.

During his three-day tour of Igembe, Tigania and Imenti  in Meru county, several local leaders and Party of National Unity (PNU) supporters endorsed Munya as the region’s spokesperson .

“Munya is our kingpin and we don’t acknowledge anybody else and very soon we will make a major announcement in a mega rally that will host several governors, legislators, elders and other  leaders from central and East of the mountain,” said Mpuru.

To what could be a counter ‘coup’ in the fight for the kingpin after National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi was recently coronated as Mt Kenya spokesperson, Munya hinted that very soon “genuine elders” will make a major announcement.

Opposed to presiential bid call

Munya is viciously opposed to calls by Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi that Mt Kenya East backs a presidential candidate from the East in the next election as reciprocation for past support.

He has also poured scorn Muturi’s recent coronation as the Mt Kenya spokesperson.

According to Munya, leaders from the region will on July 26 hold a mega meeting to decide the political direction for the mountain.

But Muturi who is at the centre of the controversy on Sunday while in Meru, urged leaders from Mt Kenya to embrace unity of purpose ahead of the general election.

Speaking during a church service at NICA St Peter Kaunjira  in North Imenti, Muturi said the region will have a strong bargaining power if its leaders work together ahead of the next election.

He told off Munya for dismissing his installation asking him to respect the views and decision of the elders.
