Defending WPL champs Vihiga Queens tackle Makolanders
Women Premier League (WPL) defending champions Vihiga Queens host Makolanders in the only league match scheduled for Saturday as they look to clinch the title for the third consecutive time.
The holders are currently top of the table at 70 points from the 25 matches played, winning 23, drew one and lost one.
The side is three points clear of second-placed Gaspo Youth with a match in hand and a win in Saturday’s encounter will see them take their points tally beyond any other competitor’s reach.
The Alex Alumira-coached side goes into the fixture with a clear advantage on paper as they hope to complete a double against Makolanders.
The first leg encounter at Camp Toyoyo ended 5-1 in favour of the holders even as Alumira rued missed chances in the highly one-sided encounter.
Fight for title
Makolanders are currently 10th in the log after 26 matches where they managed nine wins and one draw for 28 points.
As Vihiga fight for the title, their lead striker Terry Engesha will be in a battle of her own as she looks to win the top scorers race.
Currently, she is tied at 32 goals with Kisumu All Starlets’ Mercy Airo. Three of Engesha’s goals are from penalty kicks.
Engesha has an advantage in the race as she is likely to play in the team’s three remaining matches against Makolanders, Spedag and Trans Nzoia Falcons.
Kisumu have played 27 matches and are set to face their last opponent, Wadadia, on November 9 which is the last day of league action.
On Sunday, Makolanders travel to Eldoret where they face 11th placed Eldoret Falcons as the two sides fight for 10 positions. Falcons are two points behind Makolanders and a win will take them a point behind ninth-placed Zetech Sparks.
In another match, relegation-threatened Spedag takes on Thika at Camp Toyoyo with a win set to put them a point above 13th placed Nyuki Starlets.
Oserian Ladies, currently tied at 39 points with their weekend rivals Kibera Girls chase their 12th win in 27 matches while their hosts will be looking to go for a win to cement sixth place.
