Detectives launch probe into students’ suicide, rape in JKUAT, Maseno
Police have launched investigations into the death of a fourth-year Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) student last Saturday, just three days to his graduation.
The university’s administration said the deceased Masiga Jesse Lenny, 22, was to graduate today when the institution holds its 38th graduation ceremony and it is suspected he committed suicide over missing marks.
“It was established that the deceased was to graduate on June 28, but he had challenges due to missing marks which was stressing him,” read a police report seen by People Daily.
The deceased was found by his girlfriend inside her room at Maya Apartments along Kenya Road while hanging in the bathroom using a laptop charger.
“He also had stab wounds on the chest and was found hanging using a laptop charger. The body was transferred to General Kago Funeral Home in Thika awaiting post-mortem,” read the police report. Police are also investigating the possibility of murder, with the stab wounds raising eyebrows.
Meanwhile, police in Kisumu West have launched manhunt for suspects who allegedly raped a Maseno University student.
Police are also investigating the incident following reports the victim was on Sunday morning raped by two men, believed to be her fellow students.
The Third Year student, aged 21, was enroute from Luanda town at around 3am when she was accosted by three men who forced her to open her house.
The suspects also robbed her of her radio, two mobile phones and a gas cooker.
One of them then got out of the house to keep watch as the two raped her in turns.
The victim was rushed to Chulaimbo hospital by police officers immediately after the alleged ordeal where she was treated and discharged.
Confirming the incident, Kisumu West OCPD David Nyabuto said the victim reported that the suspects were her colleagues.
Nyabuto said police have launched probe into the incident, noting that the DCI is aiding the investigations process through tracking the victim’s phone stolen by the suspects.
“According to the victim, she suspects that who sexually assaulted her were her college mates. We are commenced investigations into the attack,” Nyabuto told People Daily yesterday.
The police boss added the victim appeared drunk at the time of the reported incident. “We have not made any arrest yet because the victim did not manage to positively identify the any of the suspects. We are tracing them using the stolen mobile phones,” he said.
