JKUAT students head to China for global tech competition
Three Jomo Kenyatta University students who developed a unique system that tele-monitors patients remotely will be heading to China to take part in the Global Huawei ICT Competition mid this month.
Anne Kariithi Wanjiku, David Rodney Osodo and Patrick Kisio Muema will be showcasing their innovation, the Cardio Intelligent Monitoring System, which is a computer-based application that receives signals from ECG devices and analyses ECG patterns. This helps physicians stay updated on their patient’s progress remotely,” explained Anne.
“The inspiration behind this innovation was the gap between chronic heart condition patients and hospitals which motivated us to develop a solution based tele-monitor that allows physicians to keep track of their patients,” says Kariithi. Exuding confidence, she believes the team will give a good account of themselves in the global competition,
The trio will be joined by two other finalists - Tyler Wanjiru Mercy who will compete in the Cloud Track and Terence Omondi Otieno who will showcase his skills in the Network Track.
Wanjiru, who came third in the Cloud category during the regional competition, hence securing her position in the upcoming competition says the contest has provided her with a healthy platform to compete and exchange ideas. She says the experience has enhanced her ICT knowledge, practical skills and innovation abilities using new technologies and platforms.
Omondi says his participation in the competition has provided him with valuable experience, a platform for networking and an opportunity to enhance his skills. He particularly highlights the hands-on experience has gained as a significant benefit of his involvement in the competition.
The Huawei ICT Competition targets students enrolled in Huawei ICT academies and those in higher education institutions worldwide who are interested in joining the ICT Academy.
Since its launch, the competition has attracted over 12,000 Kenyan students from more than 40 universities and colleges.
Globally, it has reached 82 countries, involving 150,000 students from over 2,000 universities and colleges.
While congratulating the students, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Robert Kinyua urged the students to put their best foot forward and fly the university’s flag high.
