Ex-President Moi re-admitted in city hospital, family urges media caution
Retired President Moi was on Saturday re-admitted to the Nairobi Hospital, barely two days after he had been discharged from the health facility.
In statement, family spokesman Lee Njiru said Moi, 95, was taken back to hospital for what he described as “routine medical check-up.”
The former Head of State had been discharged from the same hospital on Thursday. He had previously been admitted to the city hospital on October 27, where he was undergoing treatment for undisclosed ailment. However, some media reports indicate that Moi had developed chest problems.
Yesterday, Njiru reiterated that Moi was “alert” adding that he was being attended to by a professional medical team led by his personal physician Dr David Silverstein.
“He is in a VIP wing, a homely set-up to facilitate continual check-up and necessary treatment,” said the spokesman.
Unwarranted alarm
Njiru cautioned the media against publishing unverified information about the former President and only to rely on official updates from the family.
“I appeal to the press fraternity not to cause unwarranted alarm by exploiting the credulity of the masses,” he said.
Njiru, who has worked as Moi’s press secretary for over 40 years, again dispelled rumours that the former Head of State was in a critical condition, saying he was just admitted for close monitoring by his doctors. Last week, Moi’s family criticised a section of the media for allegedly publishing alarming reports and blowing the issue on his health out of proportion.
