Likoni tragedy: Family in yet another wait as autopsy postponed
Despite the long wait for the recovery of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu’s bodies, the bereaved family has to endure yet another wait to bury their loved ones as police are still detaining the bodies pending autopsy.
This comes even as police want those who witnessed the vehicle the two were travelling in plunging into the ocean to record statements with detectives at Likoni Police Station.
“We are appealing to those who witnessed the accident to come record statements and help us in investigations,” said Likoni Sub-county police commander Benjamin Rotich.
Hopes of carrying out postmortem on the bodies yesterday were dashed after the family was informed by police that they have to wait for the Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor to arrive.
The family spent the better part of yesterday morning shuttling from Jocham Hospital mortuary and Ferry Police Station where they were informed the bodies are still under police custody.
“They told us that for now we have no authority over the bodies; they will only be handed over to us after the autopsy examination is performed and the report is out,” said family spokesman Luka Mbati. Oduor had not arrived by 4pm yesterday.
