Residents of Luanda town in Vihiga county are living in fear following the murder of five boda boda riders in a span of one month.

On Thursday last week, three boda boda operators were found murdered by a suspected gang.

Yesterday, Luanda MP Dick Maungu asked the security apparatus in Luanda town to wake up from their slumber and face the criminals.

Maungu said it is disappointing for innocent people to be killed a few meters from a well staffed police station.

“We have criminals who have decided to kill our people. We want our police officers to wake up and deal with these crooks,” said Maungu.

The lawmaker accused security agents of laxity, saying they were unable to guarantee the safety of residents in the town.

Maungu said police officers who are supposed to protect locals and their properties are now colluding with criminals to terrorize residents.

“I have got information that some of the police officers are leasing their uniforms and guns to criminals to terrorize our people and if that is the case, we need to have them kicked out of this town,” Maungu said.

He warned that the locals will be forced to defend themselves from the criminals if the police will continue sleeping on their job.  “If you kill by the sword you deserve to die by the sword and that is what we are going to do to ensure all those criminal elements have been eliminated,” he said.

He said most of the officers just spent time in chang’aa dens collecting bribes in the name of fighting drugs in town. Maungu was speaking in Luanda town after meeting the bereaved families.
