Over 64,000 goats, sheep vaccinated in Turkana to improve herd immunity
Over 64,000 goats and sheep have been vaccinated in a two-week exercise targeting Loima and Turkana West Sub-counties has been jointly undertaken by the county government and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under Nawiri programme.
The activity started with participatory disease surveillance and aimed at improving herd immunity against the Peste des Petit Ruminants (PPR) disease in Letea, Nanam and Lokiriama/Lorengippi wards.
County Executive for Agriculture, Livestock Development and Fisheries David Erukudi said he was contented with the activity as it had surpassed the targeted livestock by 7.1 per cent.
He underscored the importance of the activity along the borderlands, as part of an effort to turn the region into a livestock disease-free zone through informed surveillance.
Erukudi commended Nawiri for the collaboration and assured the teams that the County Government will strategically work with all stakeholders to achieve the Governor's agenda on food security.
On his part, County Director for Veterinary Services Dr Benson Longor said that the department's broader objective on Transboundary Disease (TADs) control and the decentralized Animal Health Programme was to contribute to the success of the Governor’s second development agenda.
He added that he was satisfied with how the teams mopped up the livestock through vaccination and support treatment aimed at stimulating markets in the Kenya- Uganda as well as Kenya- south Sudan corridors that are both strategic in peace-building initiatives.
