Government assures safety as schools in Kapedo reopen

More than 10 schools that had been shut in the troubled Kapedo at the border of Baringo and Turkana counties have reopened as the government assures residents of their safety.
Learning had been paralysed due to ongoing operation to flush out bandits following the killing of 10 people, including a senior police officer.
Rift Valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya yesterday said schools will be provided with enough security to ensure smooth running of the institutions.
“Normalcy has been restored in the region and we call on teachers to report back to their work stations,” said Natembeya.
Some of the schools that had been grounded include; Nginy’ang, Chemolingot, Cheptunoiyo, Nalegat, Chesirimnyon, Kositei, Komolion and Chepkalacha primary schools. Others include: Kapedo Mixed Secondary and Kapedo Mixed Primary.
Situation has been aggravated by the brutal murder of a senior Teachers Service Commission (TSC) officer and other five people whose bullet-riddled bodies were found dumped at Arabal in Baringo South sub-county.
The deceased, Paul Kosgei, who was the Tiaty Sub-county Human Resource Officer and five others were abducted at a local club in Chemolingot and their bodies later found dumped.
Autopsy results revealed they were tortured before being shot. Post-mortem was conducted at the Baringo County Referral Hospital in Kabarnet by area pathologist Wangare Wambui and Titus Ngulungu, who represented the Independent Medico Legal Unit.
Massive operation
The government rolled out the massive operation last week to flush out armed bandits.
During the deadly raid a week ago, armed bandits laid an ambush on a vehicle Emadau Temakol was travelling near Ameyan Bridge killing him instantly.
He was heading to Nairobi after leading a police operation to flush out bandits in the troubled region.
Attack came barely three days after another one where a middle-aged man was killed and three people injured at Kapedo.
Natembeya has maintained that the security operation will continue until the situation is put under control.
The administrator has at the same time dismissed calls by local leaders that the operation be stopped and dialogue given a chance.
