Indigenous Kenyans demand inclusivity from government in decision making
Members of the Indigenous People now want the government to include them when making decisions on renewable energy projects passing through their community land and territories.
They say that there has been an increase in the number of renewable energy development projects set up on the indigenous people’s (IPs) lands and territories without involvement of the communities.
Speaking during the launch of the Indigenous People and Renewable Energy project in Kenya report, the Ogiek People Development Program Director Daniel Kubei said the communities don’t benefit from the projects.
Kubei revealed that unlawful eviction, unfair compensation, and poor monitoring of benefit sharing policies was witnessed during allocation of land for the projects despite there being detailed documents on human rights, energy and land policies to guide them.
