Students from poor backgrounds in Kilifi have received four-year scholarships to further their secondary school education, thanks to Centum Real Estate Company.

The students who got 320 marks and above in their 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination and who had their dreams almost shattered will now study as their fees will be paid.

Accompanied by their parents and guardians, the 50 learners streamed to the Awali estate grounds where they received letters of confirmation for the scholarship programme sponsored by the company.

Some of the students who received scholarship letters are Michelle Neema, 16, who attended Mkwajuni Primary School and scored 342 marks and will join Ribe Girls Secondary School.

Her parent, Patrick Mbaga, who is living with disability, said her daughter was almost losing hope of ever joining her dream school, but with the scholarship, she will pursue her studies.

“I am overjoyed because my dreams of becoming a doctor were almost shattered, but with this scholarship, I am happy that I will join Ribe girls, which is the best school I wished to join, we thank the sponsors for the programme because it will uplift our lives,” said Neema.

Another student, David Samuel could not hide his joy after he was selected. Samuel 16, a former student at Vipingo Primary will join Malindi High School where he was selected after getting 359 marks. His mother Josephine Dama, a casual labourer at Vipingo Ridge farm estates, said her fourth born son will study thanks to the scholarship.

“I am a casual labourer. My work is to cut sisal at the farms, the small money I get could not educate my children, I am thankful to this scholarship programme because it has relieved me of the big fees burden,” said Dama.

Herman Mwandege, a former student of Kapecha Primary School who got 322 marks, said he will join Mariakani Boys High School to actualise his education dream. He said his parents are struggling with harsh economic times and the scholarship came in handy.

Speaking during the award ceremony yesterday Kenneth Mbae, Managing Director at Centum Real Estate Company, said since they started the programme learners from underprivileged areas have been seamlessly sponsored.

“Today is another joyous opportunity. We are awarding scholarships to 50 bright and needy beneficiaries who would have missed a chance to join high school,” he said.
Learners must attain 320 marks and above to qualify for the scholarship and be from humble background.
