The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened a probe into the killing of six people during a confrontation with police officers at Isebania Police Station in Migori on Thursday, May 25, 2023.

The deceased persons were part of a mob that invaded the police station demanding the release of all inmates locked up in the cells on Thursday evening.

In a statement on Saturday, IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori said several other persons including police officers were injured during the confrontation.

Makori said the authority has dispatched a Rapid Response Team to launch investigations into the deaths and injuries.

"The incident allegedly occurred as police officers from Isebania Police Station attempted to restore peace through a public order management operation," Makori said.

She noted that IPOA would recommend prosecution for any police officers found culpable of misusing their firearm.

"Upon conclusion of its investigations, the Authority shall take appropriate action including recommending to the Director of Public Prosecutions the prosecution of any person found culpable.
In all its investigations, IPOA is impartial, fair and transparent," IPOA added.

Police had earlier said the group of goons invaded the station in a pick-up full of stones and machetes on the evening of Thursday.

Upon arrival at the station, the armed men destroyed the gates of the cells, broke down windows of the station armory, and other offices using stones.

Police said efforts to disperse the mob with tear gas were futile as they made their way to the cells.

They attacked the gates of the cells as they demanded that all suspects in custody are released.

The security officers said they were forced to use live ammunition after the thugs attempted to release the inmates.
