Jubilee MPs, C*rdinal Njue call for consensus on BBI
Four Jubilee legislators have hailed the Catholic Church for vouching for a consensus in the ongoing Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) debate ahead of a referendum.
The MPs urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to tame ODM leader Raila Odinga whom they said is out to divide the country through a contested referendum adding that he is angling to use the referendum to campaign for his 2022 presidential race.
They said consensus was the only way that the debate can lead to a united nation devoid of tribal divisions adding the BBI report must be amended in order to accommodate the wishes of all Kenyans.
The four who included Caleb Kositany (Soi), Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu), Githua Wamachukuru (Kabete) and Nimrod Mbai of Kitui East pleaded with those opposed to the consensus route to reevaluate their stands.
They spoke at St.Andrews Catholic Church in Limuru during a funds drive which culminated to a ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a new church in an event which was graced by the head of the Catholic Church John Cardinal Njue.
The leaders were echoing Njue's call on Kenya to pray for their leaders in order for them to make decisions which will unite the country.
Cardinal Njue said: "Let us pray for our leaders so that the decisions they make unites the nation and not cause friction among them. Kenyans should love each other and live like brothers and sisters and not like enemies."
Speaking after the service, Kositany said that a section of power hungry leaders wants to divide Kenyans for their own selfish ends and urged citizens to be wary of them.
He said that majority of Kenyans are opposed to a contested referendum and want to walk on the same road through consensus adding a contested plebiscite is likely to plunge the country into regional divisions.
"We in Jubilee party are pleading with our national leader President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure that the pleas of the Catholic Church and other bodies for a consensus and amendment of the BBI report is adhered to. We should not defy the church because it's the same as defying God," he said.
Kositany who is the Jubilee's Deputy Secretary General said the BBI should follow the route which Uhuru and Deputy President William Ruto took in 2013 and which brought peace in the Rift Valley.
