Just write a letter and get pardoned – UoN VC Kiama tells expelled students

The University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama has asked students who were expelled by the institution to write a letter to the Pardon Advisory Committee so that they can be readmitted to continue with their learning.

Prof Kiama said it was wrong to victimise expelled students for the wrong they may have done and they deserve a second chance at the institution.

"When I assumed office early last year (2020) we had so many students who had been expelled but they could not go home. They were hanging around the university hostels. I said look, these are our children and we have a responsibility to mould them so that they can finish school and go back to serve the communities where they came from," Prof Kiama told Citizen TV on Monday night.

The VC further said the institution has formed Pardon Advisory Committee which advises him on what to do once an expelled student writes an apology letter.

"We do not even ask you what you did. All we need from you is a letter saying you are ready to come back. We have a form you can fill and we'll readmit you without telling other students you had been expelled," he said.

Prof Kiama said he knew of some of the students who had been expelled from the institution and went to other universities and they are great leaders now.

"We have senior people in senior positions who were expelled from the university. They went to Dar Es Salaam and other universities and they excelled. Why don't we have them there?" He posed.

The UoN boss said he was happy to see those who have been pardoned doing well.

"I have not found those who were readmitted being mentioned on anything," he said.
