Kalonzo hosts Mudavadi and Wetangula at private meeting
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, his Amani National Congress (ANC) counterpart Musalia Mudavadi and Ford Kenya boss Moses Wetangula yesterday held a meeting at a hotel in Athi River, Machakos County in what signaled a new initiative to form an alliance ahead of the 2022 election.
It was the second meeting the three National Super Alliance (Nasa) leaders were holding in as many weeks in a bid to forge a common political front going into the next General Election.
Also present at the meeting held at the Stoni Athi Resort were Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu and a host of Members of Parliament allied to Kalonzo drawn from Makueni, Machakos and Kitui counties.
Speaking during the meeting, Wetangula gave indication that they were headed for a political alliance with other like-minded leaders aimed at taking over the country’s leadership come 2022.
“Our meetings will bear good fruits. We only need to ignore our detractors and focus on the bigger picture.
The three of us and all other leaders of goodwill are equal to the task of reforming this country,” said the Bungoma Senator.
Wetangula said their “political vehicle” was still open to those who share their ideology to transform the nation positively.
He, however, asked those willing to join them to do so without attaching any conditions.
“Join us unconditionally so that we can move together. So that we build formidable alliances.
At the end of the day, only one of us will sit on the top seat and others will take up other positions,” said Wetangula.
He was responding to calls by earlier speakers led by Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior for the trio to bring on board other “like-minded” leaders, mentioning Opposition leader Raila Odinga, Kanu chairman Gideon Moi and his Chama cha Mashinani counterpart Isaac Ruto.
Addressing the meeting, Mudavadi accused Deputy President William Ruto of being part of the problems affecting the country.
He said it was wrong for Ruto to lie to Kenyans that he could help rescue them from the problems the country’s economy was grappling with.
“You are responsible for every mess in this country, ranging from high taxation, massive retrenchment, ballooning foreign debt, corruption and other policies that have impoverished this country,” said Mudavadi.
Economic mess
Ngilu on her part urged the three to unite and form a government that will redeem the country from the current economic mess.
“I want to tell you that all eyes of this great country are looking up to you to deliver the nation,” she said.
Mutula Jnr lauded Kalonzo for reaching out to Mudavadi and Wetangula, describing them as ‘ political friends.’
Kaiti MP Joshua Kimilu said yesterday’s meeting was an indication of the emerging alliance between Kalonzo and leaders from the Western region and beyond.
“This is a good signal that our party leader is looking for an alliance with the Luhya nation,” said Kimilu.
