Kenya Premier League CEO Jack Oguda is not sure when the country’s top flight will end.
Oguda says KPL will only make a final decision when the government assures of safety of players due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Leagues across the world are suspended with no definite date on when they will resume and a number of suggestions have been thrown around on how to handle the situation but so far, none apart from Belgium, have come up with a solution.
Belgium last week agreed to complete the season and handed Club Brugge the title and there have been talks in local circles to end the KPL and hand Gor Mahia the title with 12 matches remaining, drawing the wrath of most teams.
Oguda has also weighed in on the matter, saying cancelling the season is out of the question.
“The Executive Council has confirmed that the league remains suspended indefinitely awaiting official directives from government.
There is really little choice for us because as it stands, everybody is affected. In any case, Fifa is discussing the same as it will affect the calendar and transfer window plus players’ contracts,” Oguda told People Sport yesterday.
He added: “What we can say now is that KPL will make no commitment in declaring champions at least not yet.
Therefore people have to be patient and not pre-empt because the priority for everyone is safety.”
However, Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula, whose team are second on the table, seven points behind Gor, want KPL to organise a playoff between K’Ogalo and his side to determine the winners.
“We do not want shortcuts or any favouritism. The league had still so many matches and the gap at the top was only seven points between us and we have one match in hand.
I suggest we have a winner take it all duel against them in a playoff. I know we can beat them again,” said Shimanyula.
