Kiambu Deputy Governor urges parents to be alert to curb teenage pregnancies
Kiambu Deputy Governor Joyce Ngugi has raised the red flag over teenage pregnancies during the COVID-19 pandemic urging parents to be on full alert to curb the vice.
Ngugi said the number of teenagers who have been put in the family way is alarming and faulted parents and guardians of failure to take the necessary precaution measures.
“Parents have shirked their duties of ensuring that their children do not join bad company and this is worrying to say the least. The idleness during the pandemic is palpable and this is a war that we must all fight,” said Ngugi.
Her sentiments come in the wake of damning statistics which indicated that Machakos leads in increased cases of teenage pregnancies in the country.
The legislator blamed the wayward behavior on the existence of pornographic material in most social joints in the country even as he proposed for empowerment of Nyumba Kumi as a stop-gap measure for the vice.
“Nyumba Kumi should be on the forefront of stopping such social ills that have infiltrated most parts of the country including drug use during house parties. Young girls are being lured by adults and this is a bad epitaph,” noted Ngugi.
She also said the government should be steadfast in issuing guidelines on how learning institutions shall be opened.
“There is no online learning as many people may be misled to believe and what exists is despicable behavior by the youth which must be tamed,” she said.
Last week, Education CS George Magoha blamed the non the exposure of adult content saying they were leading school going children into experimenting premarital sex ending up in pregnancies.
Following the onset pandemic in early march, the government ordered schools to be shut and are tentatively set to reopen in September.
