Kiambu: Hope for talented youths as film c*mmission trains them
A group of 80 youths from different villages in Kiambu County have gained film-making skills after a five-day training by Kenya Film Commission.
According to the beneficiaries, the empowerment program gave them hands-on knowledge on cameras, video editing, script-writing and other film techniques.
Led by Patricia Wanjiku Waweru from Muthaiga village in Thika, the youths noted that the empowerment will expose them to the entertainment world and link them to careers in film.
They said that the knowledge will keep them busy and far from outlawed substances and societal vices.
Speaking during their graduation ceremony at ACK St. Andrews Cathedral in Thika, the talented youngsters said they have already started to produce a film to tell Thika stories.
"We have been given a tool which we pledge to make use of to better our talents and make money from the various gifts we have," noted Wanjiku.
While most of them have been in local productions, they said they have never had better knowledge on how to go about production, a move they said will now help them start their own productions thereby creating more jobs.
Thika Member of Parliament Patrick Wainaina who had partnered with the commission revealed plans to establish a studio in his constituency to identify talent, nurture youth in film.
"It's the high time we revisit this issue to ensure that our local content has enough market to to inculcate a culture of growing our own," said Patrick Wainaina.
Over the years, foreign soap operas and films have dominated local programming- mainly due to their better quality and low cost.
