Kiambu legislators, residents skip Ndumberi prayer meeting
The much-hyped Kiambu Interdenominational Prayers meeting was given a wide berth by area MPs and county residents with only a handful of attending on Sunday.
The prayer meeting which had been convened by governor James Nyoro, pictured, at Ndumberi Stadium to seek divine intervention for the county which has been embroiled in endless leadership wrangles as well as an upsurge of the Covid-19 pandemic turned out as a congregation of the clergy, a section of MCA, Ward Administrators and the county executive.
Save for host Kiambu Town MP Jude Njomo who hosted and his Kiambaa counterpart who sent apologies, all the other area MPs including Kimani Ichung’wa (Kikuyu), Patrick Wainaina (Thika Town), Peter Mwathi (Limuru), Jonah Mburu (Lari), Githua Wamacukuru (Kabete), Simon King’ara (Ruiru) Wanjiku Kibe (Gatundu North), Gabriel Kago (Githunguri) and Moses Kuria (Gatundu South) boycotted the event despite having been invited.
A large dome mounted on the ground, was virtually empty with sources intimating that locals were either not properly mobilised or were following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s ban on social gathering amid the apparent increase of Covid-19 positive cases.
Conduct civic education
Nyoro who downplayed the poor turn out said that the clergy will lead in conducting civic education on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) which he asked locals to support.
He however urged locals and Kenyans in general to purpose to read the BBI proposals in order to make independent and informed decisions.
“I believe that you all will like the contents of the document once you read it because it holds the future of the country,” he said. He, at the same time, reiterated that workers in hotels, restaurants and bars within Kiambu county will be required to display their valid Covid-19 certificate as they serve customers.
Nyoro also warned that market traders found operating without wearing masks will be arrested and prosecuted forthwith before respective markets are closed indefinitely.
On Saturday, the governor said Covid-19 containment measures enforcement officers are on high alert across the country in order to prevent further infections.
The governor at the same time said that as the country continues to grapple with the upsurge of new Covid-19 cases, his county is virtually broke and hence struggling to remain afloat in the fight against the pandemic.
He urged the national government to release funds to counties in order for them to effectively cope with the disease saying that the exchequer is yet to release the September and October county funds.
