Kiambu to demolish old houses to pave way for high-rise apartments
Kiambu County government is seeking to demolish old and dilapidated houses at Majengo area to pave way for construction of high-rise apartments for sale to the public.
In an advertisement in the local dailies, Governor James Nyoro expressed plans to put up flats on its 1.022-acre piece of land located within Ruiru town.
Currently, some 200 derelict houses where staff from the defunct municipal council have been living will be demolished to pave way for the 500-housing unit project.
In the quest to provide affordable housing to Kiambu residents, Governor Nyoro had earlier said he will leave nothing to chance in ensuring it explores solutions to better housing.
Thirst for new and modern houses has been welcomed as a long overdue exercise, with most of the expected beneficiaries urging the county to hasten the process.
James Mwangi, a resident who has been living in one of the run-down houses, said the county government should expedite the process to guarantee them a better housing.
“We welcome construction of decent houses that will see us live decently,” said Mwangi.
Nyambura Mumbi, an occupant in the current houses, said the new structures will accord them a better chance to enjoy life.
Similar project
According to Elijah Njoroge, the County Assembly Chairman in-charge of Committee on Lands, Physical Planning, Municipality and Housing, said the county will soon roll out a similar project in Thika town.
The Biashara Ward Rep said the new housing units will be given to the current occupants, while the remaining 300 will be sold to county staff and other residents.
“Proceeds of the sale will be spent on construction of another housing project in Thika in bid to improve housing conditions in the vast county,” he said.
Prior to the construction, Njoroge said the county will next week engage those affected in a rigorous public participation exercise that would enlighten them about the development.
He reiterated that the devolved unit is committed to lowering the cost of housing to facilitate all residents to own houses going forward.
National and county governments have partnered to provide social and low-cost housing targeting citizens who earn between Sh0-15,000 and Sh15,000 to 60,000 respectively.
