Kitale Bishop urges the government to have integrity with Covid-19 funds
Kitale Catholic Bishop Anthony Maurice Crowley has asked the Covid response emergence Committee in Trans Nzoia County to ensure transparency in handling Covid-19 funds.
The church head said donations must be spent well for the avoidance of doubts of misappropriation.
“Funds meant to assist the vulnerable during this moment of crisis need to be put under the stewardship of dedicated persons to make better the use of the food and other commodities as quickly as possible, but this does not mean we abandon commitment to fighting corruption’’, said Bishop Crowley.
He said the scale of the crisis has raised the risks and dangers of the theft of public money that should be used to save lives and rebuild livelihoods.
Speaking to People Daily at his Milimani residence when he received foodstuff and soaps donated by Kiminini Member of Parliament (MP) Chris Wamalwa, the clergyman said Corona Virus is real and there is need for concerted efforts to eradicate it by following the Ministry of Health's guidelines.
He said his church will continue putting emphasis on the war against corruption.
‘’ We are fully in support of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s declaration of zero tolerance on corruption and we as the church have no option but ask Governors to adopt a new framework that will help commit the fund to systematically address corruption risks during disbursements to the needy’’, said the Bishop.
Mr. Wamalwa pledged to continue helping the church and the priests who have been badly hit as a result of the pandemic and asked the President to allow churches to partially open up in strict adherence to the guidelines of the Ministry of Health.
