Legislator asks Parliament to defend Judiciary
Kandara MP Alice Wahome has challenged Parliament to defend the independence of the Judiciary instead of attacking it.
She criticised remarks by Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata during the burial of former Minister Charles Rubia that the Judiciary had failed the veteran politician in his compensation case.
Speaking in Malindi, Wahome accused the senator, who is also Rubia family’s lawyer, of criticising a judge yet the court was still pending in court.
“I do not associate myself with the statement made by the honourable Kang’ata at the burial of Charles Rubia. You cannot criticise a judge who is handling your case outside the court when the judgement is pending,’’ she said.
Wahome, however, maintained the need to fight corruption within the Judiciary.
“We have criticised the Judiciary and it must accept positive criticism,’’ she said.
The MP said the Judiciary needs to be firm and dispense justice without fear or favour, intimidation from the Executive.
The legislator also called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to appoint the judges who were nominated by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) instead on sitting on the names.
The lawmaker has been on a warpath with her Jubilee party after she criticised the president recently.
