Maa, Kamba leaders vow to back BBI
Leaders from the Maasai and Kamba communities have forged a united front to push for the implementation of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) as well as other regional matters.
The leaders drawn from Kajiado, Machakos and Kitui counties said they form a region that has similar challenges and are satisfied with the provisions BBI has for the region.
They urged political leaders in the country to avoid sideshows that were designed to derail the unity efforts that were meant to correct the divisions of the past.
Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku, Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua, Kitui Senator Enock Wambua and Machakos Woman Rep Joyce Kamene said the wind of change was blowing across the country ahead of the 2022 General-Election and they need to be part of the next government.
“We are working together as neighbours. The Kamba and the Maasai communities have cooperated on many things and being part of the next government will be one of them,” said Musyoka.
He added that the unity, as espoused in the BBI, is what the country needs and castigated the animosities that were being demonstrated by utterances of other leaders who had made the BBI look like an “us versus them” contest.
Handshake support
Lenku reiterated his support for the Handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM Leader Raila Odinga.
He said the region was happy with the Handshake, as it had brought peace and co-existence between different communities living in cosmopolitan counties.
The leaders were speaking at Lenku’s rural home in Lenkisim, Kajiado South, during the sixth anniversary of the death of his father the late Paramount Chief Lenku ole Mpaa.
The occasion was also used to celebrate the graduation of his eldest daughter and the rite of passage of his eldest son.
In a show of unity between Musyoka and Mutua, Wambua asserted that Musyoka was the indisputable leader of the Kamba community and called on all leaders to respect him.
“This is our man whom we have sent to negotiate for us as the Kamba community at the national level. We recognise that Mr Lenku has been anointed the spokesman of the Maa Nation and therefore, the two can lead our communities to bargain for our people. Our unity will be our strength,” said Wambua.
