Maalim puts Rift war mongers on notice
The incoming Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Maalim Mohamed has put politicians on notice against polarising the region ahead of the General Election. Maalim said he has his work cut out which include ensuring the region remains peaceful before, during and after the polls.
Speaking at his office in Nakuru yesterday, when he officially took over operations from his predecessor George Natembeya, Maalim called for concerted efforts among stakeholders to ensure peace prevails.
“As we head to the polls, my objective is to secure the region from any form of elections related violence and disruption of peace. Those who incite Kenyans will be dealt with in accordance with the law, no matter the rank,” said Maalim.
Hate mongers He said with his team, they are willing to work with leaders to promote peace and cohesion in the region, but warned that the government will be on high alert to tame hate mongers and inciters.
“The leaders are free to traverse any part of Rift Valley on condition that they will promote peace, no one should be evicted from their homes as a result of violence, Kenyans have a right to live anywhere in the region,” he said.
Maalim who met with all the 14 county commissioners, their security and intelligence committees, said he is ready to work in the footsteps of his predecessor who streamlined the region’s security. “I am thankful for the opportunity to be at this office.
It’s a dream, everything has its time and the best time is God’s time,” he said.
While giving a status report of the region, Maalim singled out four counties of Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot and Laikipia as restive saying he intends to make his presence felt in the areas through solutions.
“In Laikipia, the government has done its work by adding another administrative unit, we have deployed more officers on the ground,” he said.
