Machogu names councils for 14 learning inst*tutions

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has now constituted university councils for at least 14 institutions of higher learning.

A majority of universities have been operating without councils, which are critical for key policy directions and overseeing operations on behalf of the government.

Among those appointed was former Education Chief Administrative Secretary Dr Sara Ruto, who will chair the Kisii University council for a period of three years.

“The appointment of Irene Caroline Chizupo is revoked,” said Machogu in a Kenya Gazette notice published yesterday.

Ruto’s appointment became effective on Tuesday.

Politician Prof Amukowa Anangwe has also been appointed to chair the University of Nairobi (UoN) council for a period of three years. The CS appointed Ahmed Sheikh Abdullai, Darmain ole Warkae, Caren Kerubo Omwenga and  Sally Ngeringwony Toroitich as members of the Council of UoN.

“Gazette Notice Numbers 8074, 8075 and 9959 of 2022 are revoked,” Machogu said.

He will now work alongside Ahmed Sheikh Abdullai, Dr Darmain ole Warkae, Caren Kerubo Omwenga, Dr Sally Ngeringwony Toroitich as members of the council of the UoN while four other members were revoked.

For Chuka University, Prof David Serrem will serve as theChairperson while Crispus Micheni Ndeke, Linet Kwamboka Maganda, Samuel Gacheru Gitonga, Zephania Rwanda Mbaka, Margaret Makhungu are the newly appointed members.

At the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga of Science and Technology, David Moranga Oyugi, Joan Atieno Odawa, Ambeyi Ligavo, Isaac Kiprop Chebon are the new council members.

John Nderitu, Hassan Abdi Mohammed, Joel Yego, Prof Angeline Nduku Kioko, Velma Mudasa have been appointed as members of the Council of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

Prof Emmanuel Mutisya was appointed to chair the inaugural University Council of Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

Undergoing construction

Affiliated to the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, KAIST is under construction through a Sh10 billion funding from the Korea Government.

Prof Washington Yotto, Dr Collins Tanui, Eng Meshak Kidenda and Purity Mureithi will serve as members of the institution.

Similarly, Prof Naftali Omolo Ongati is the new Chairperson of Maseno Universities while Dr Matilda Chemutai Sang, Darius Getanda Isaboke and Ponyochi Kunyobo are the new members of the council.

For Masinde Muliro University, Dr Pamela Sitienei is the new chairperson while Grace Wanja Kimotho, Dr Kennedy Ochieng Olungo, Dorothy Kimeu, George Akolo Lutomia, Susan Nyaboke Nyasinga are the council members.

At Kisii University, Machogu appointed Sara Ruto as the new council chair alongside Samson Mucheluleas as the new council member.  The CS revoked the appointment of Irene Caroline Chizupo from the Kisii University Council.

Machogu also revoked the appointment of Margaret Maimba from the Laikipia University Council.

In the same University, he appointed Charles Anyanga Malalah, Paul Bore, Marie Wanjeri Mugo and Sereya Beatrice Maitoyo as members.

At Masai Mara University, Machogu appointed Dickson Malanga Shikanga, Peter ole Nkuraiya, Susan Chebet and Elizabeth Ayoo as new council members.

Machogu revoked the appointment of Lucy Kiria from the Masai Mara University Council. He appointed Naftali Omolo Ongati to serve as Chairperson of the Maseno University Council.
