Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has condemned continued detention of his client Maina Njenga, who was arrested on Wednesday night.

The former Mungiki sect leader is said to have been arrested at the Olosurutia area in Kajiado County alongside his two brothers and his personal assistant Ole Lekishe.

In a statement on Sunday, Ndegwa said Njenga is still missing, four days later.

The renowned advocate claimed that Njenga was not booked at any police station and attempts to access him have been futile.

He castigated President William Ruto's administration, saying the country is fast sliding back into the dark era of detention without trial.

"Good morning Kenya the days of detention without trial are here with us…..My client Maina Njenga is still missing. He was abducted by police whose Subarus had a south Sudan registration number…He was never booked in any police station," the lawyer wrote on Twitter.

Njenga, a close associate of Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga, is suspected to have been arrested in connection with the opposition's protests.

The self-proclaimed religious leader's arrest came a day after several other Azimio leaders and supporters were taken into custody ahead of the anti-government demos on Wednesday.

Those arrested included Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino, his Kilifi South counterpart Ken Chonga and several MCAs.

Babu Owino was arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Tuesday night after landing from Mombasa.

He was taken to Wang’uru Police Station in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, where he spent two nights before being escorted to Nairobi under tight security on Friday.

The MP was arraigned in court on Friday evening alongside Bunge la Mwananchi President Calvin Okoth Otieno alias Gaucho and five others.

The suspects were charged with conspiracy to commit subversive activities. They denied the charges and were freed on Ksh100,000 cash bail each.
