Construction of Moi Stadium in Embu town which is set to host this year's Madaraka Day celebrations will cost the government Sh300 Million, the government said on Tuesday, February 21.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, while on a tour to inspect the progress of the works at the stadium, said the facility should be complete in the next one and a half months ahead of the celebrations on June 1.

He urged the contractor to expedite the construction and deliver the work in good time for the national celebrations.

The PS also cleared the air on the government's decision to change the venue of the celebrations from Njukiri Stadium to Moi Stadium, saying the move was informed by the need to consider costs and tight timelines.

"A lot of work is ongoing at this Moi Stadium and we expect that the stadium will be complete in good time," the PS said.

Omollo further announced that the theme for this year's Madaraka Day fete has changed from Universal Health Coverage and will focus on Small and Medium Enterprises.

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire said the construction of the stadium will create many jobs for the locals in the county.

The county boss stated that 95 per cent of the workmanship will come from the locals.

"It is now all system go for construction of this Moi Stadium and as a county, we are happy our locals will be employed here and that is the kind of development that we have been yearning for," Mbarire said.

Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji, who will host the national celebrations, lauded the government for choosing Embu to host the celebrations, saying it was a big honour and that the construction of the stadium will create more jobs for the locals.

The legislator also warned politicians against politicizing the project, saying that will not be condoned.

"This development is not for MP or governor but for the people of Embu county let's not bring politics into this development," Mukunji said.

The Stadium had cost the county government more than 300 million but still, it was in a deplorable condition.
