The delayed completion of the Sh1.4 billion Kisumu International Convention Centre has irked MPs, who now want the government to allocate funds to finish the project this year.

While the construction of the 6,000 seater capacity facility was commissioned in 2021 to host the Afri-cities conference, works on the project has since been abandoned.

Residents have raised concern that construction stopped soon after the Africities Summit ended and no visible work has been ongoing since.

Although, it was a well-conceived idea, the project, was taking too long to complete, forcing MPs to take a tour of the facility at the weekend.

The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Regional Development, were unhappy that the viable project that was almost turning into a white elephant.

The Committee was led by Vice chair Mary Wamaua (pictured),( Maragua), flanked by members Paul Abuor(Rongo), and Joseph Cherorot,(Kipkelion East).           More were Matungu MP Peter Nabulindo and Fafi MP Farah Yakub. Area MP Shakeel Shabbir (Kisumu East), joined the MPs in the tour of the facility in his turf.

This was a joint project to be undertaken by State Department for Housing and Urban Development, Ministry of Devolution and the County government of Kisumu.

Conference facility

It was expected to be the second Kenya’s largest conference facility, a kin to KICC to help the country regain its foothold in international conference tourism.

Speaking during a tour of the facility, the MPs noted the project was very good and can help generate revenue in millions especially in conference tourism if complete.

It comprises the main auditorium, 15 breakaway rooms, 60 exhibition spaces, outdoor Amphitheatre, VIP lounge.

It also has a cultural centre, health and fitness centre, modern press rooms, picnic area and an ultra- modern children’s park.

The committee was surprised to hear that the contract was signed on July 16, 2021.
