Mt Kenya East settles on Speaker Muturi in 2022 presidential race
Mount Kenya East region has settled on National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi as its presidential candidate in the 2022 elections, Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi declared yesterday.
Kiraitu said Mount Kenya region as the richest constituency in terms of votes must play a role in the next government.
Pro-Muturi speeches dominated the launch of Kiraitu’s book “Beyond Politics” at a city hotel with speakers describing Muturi as the best suited individual to take replace President Uhuru Kenyatta next year.
“We are not ashamed to say that Muturi belongs to us and is our anointed leader,” Kiraitu declared.
However in his address, Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia appeared to dismiss the formation of blocs in Mt Kenya region saying they will only serve in causing divisions among the people.
“This issue of establishing blocks in the region will not go well with the local politics.
It will be difficult for us to negotiate with other regions as divided as we are currently,” Kimemia told the audience.
Muturi himself narrated how Kiraitu called him informing him that elders had settled on him as the spokesperson for the Mount Kenya east region.
“JB, you have what it takes to run this country, think about it and as soon as you are ready inform me. I will give you all the support you need,” Kiraitu told Muturi.
The Speaker said he had believed that he has the ability to lead the country telling those not taking him seriously to watch his moves.
Kenyans, Muturi said should elect people with integrity and discipline adding that failure to hold these factors will result to Kenyans electing a crop of leaders like those in country governments who have been a disgrace to the society.
“I preach accountability and it is on this basis that I declared that I will contest for the presidency in the coming elections,” Muturi said.
The Meru governor described Muturi as a symbol of unity to bring together the people as President Uhuru exists.
Ocampo Six
Speakers also appeared to hit at unnamed opposition leaders whom they blamed for fixing the ‘Ocampo Six’ to be charged at The Hague.
It was Kimemia who fired the first salvo claiming that the ICC cases were crafted by a section of leaders to fix others.
“I was in the Office of the President and I can confirm that Francis Muthaura was not involved in any form of crime,” Kimemia said.
On his part Muthaura who was one of the six Kenyans charged together with President Uhuru, his deputy William Ruto.
