Anyolo to take over as Archbishop of Nairobi
Archbishop Philip Anyolo will be installed tomorrow as the new Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi.
The ceremony, which will be held at the St Mary’s Msongari grounds, will be presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Bert Van Megen.
It will be followed by a mass to be celebrated by the new archbishop.
Archbishop Anyolo will become the fourth African archbishop of Nairobi archdiocese after John Cardinal Njue, Ndingi Mwana a’ Nzeki and Maurice Cardinal Otunga.
He takes over from Njue who retired in January after attaining the age of 75.
The position of cardinal is an office in Rome though the holder can either serve in a country or in Rome.
“Cardinals are normally the owners of the Catholic church as they are the one who elect a new pope,” said Rev. Fr. Dr. James Kabata the Principal in charge of Consolata Institute of Philosophy in Nairobi.
Anyolo was appointed to head Nairobi Archdiocese on October 28 by Pope Francis.
Archbishop Anyolo was ordained as a priest at the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret in 1983.
He was ordained as bishop of catholic diocese of Kericho in 1995. He was appointed Bishop of Homa Bay in March 2003. In November 2018, he was appointed the Archbishop of Kisumu.
Other archbishops in Kenya include Anthony Muheria of Nyeri and Martin Kivuva of Mombasa.
