Union: Remove sector from counties
The National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) has renewed its call for the health sector to be reverted to the National government.
The body claimed counties are incapable of handling the sector, even as it sought better terms of engagement for medics.
Speaking in Murang’a during the 61st International Nurses’ Scientific Conference, NNAK chair Alfred Obengoo (pictured) pushed for the formation of a National Health Commission, which will be managing the sector.
“We want the health sector taken back to the National government,” he said.
He urged the government to review its decision to employ medics on contract basis.
Khama Rogo, a health consultant, cautioned against infiltration of quacks into the sector.
Sabina Chege, parliamentary Health committee chair, said the government is committed to improving the welfare of the health workers in the country.
Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata said: “There is no common health standard in all counties and this can only be achieved by taking back administration of health workers to national government,” he said.
