Government set to launch Sh3b scholarships for needy learners
The Government will this morning launch the inaugural 18,000 Elimu Yetu scholarships, which are expected to help learners from needy families continue with secondary school education.
Of the 18,000 scholarships, 9,000 will go to needy learners this year and a similar number next year, which will cumulatively cost the government at least Sh3 billion.
The Education ministry, in partnership with the World Bank and Equity Group Foundation, will give the Elimu scholarships to 110 targeted sub-counties and 15 urban settlements.
Beneficiaries will be candidates who obtained 280 marks and above and for purposes of affirmative action, orphans and applicants from vulnerable communities and those living with special needs but attained below 280 marks may be considered.
“We are determined to utilise the Sh3 billion scholarship programme to ensure all the needy and vulnerable 2019 KCPE exam candidates are supported to gain admission to schools of their choice,” said Education CS Prof George Magoha.
