NGO to construct Sh150m water tanks in Murang’a schools
A Non-Governmental Organization has embarked on constructing water tanks in various schools in Kiharu Murang’a.
Can Do Kids International through its Patron Karanja Mburu has so far constructed 46 water tanks in the public schools seeking to promote the hand washing campaign to curb the risk of spreading coronavirus.
Karanja said most schools in the area don’t wave adequate water storage facilities, frustrating the hygiene standards in school.
“The learners are forced to carry water from their homes and this is not enough to sustain them throughout the day,” he said.
“The tanks have the capacity of 30,000 liters and this will ensure there is plenty of water for the kids to wash their hands more frequently,” he added.
The patron said they are racing against time to constructing as many tanks are possible before full learning resumes early next year.
“We are targeting to do 100 tanks in all the public primary schools in the area before extending the same to other areas,” he said.
“Our aim is to keep all the children in class and they don’t have to waste time while going to fetch water,” he said.
This he said will also help boost academic performance for the pupils.
Karanja said they largely rely on donations from the well-wishers to construct the tanks with each costing Sh1.5 million.
He said the tanks will help in water conservation pointing out that they are doing additional gutters to collect the rain water.
“Most schools are not connected to piped water and harvesting rain water comes in handy” he remarked.
