Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro yesterday called on government agencies to always consult the people when coming up with policies that negatively affect businesses in the country.

He specifically called out KRA for increasing duty on imported goods from Sh2.5 million to Sh3 million per container saying that will cause losses to traders who had imported goods when the American dollar was high against Kenyan shilling.

He also said a ban on saloon cars from being used as PSVs would drive many transporters out of business.

Recent reports quoted the Ministry of Interior outlawing use of saloon cars as PSVs. Nyoro doubted whether the report was from the government.

Public participation

“I call upon government agencies to always conduct public participation on any policies that negatively impact businesses,” he said.

He was speaking at the St Louis Igwamiti Catholic church in Boiman town, Nyandarua County during Palm Sunday-cum-fund raiser for the church’s kitchen.  He called on the KRA’s Domestic Tax head to release containers held at the Port of Mombasa due to the duty hike.  Nyoro who chairs the Budget Committee in the National Assembly further challenged the Anti Counterfeit Agency to define what is counterfeit, saying selling emulated goods was not dealing in counterfeit.  “China was developed through emulation,” he claimed.

On the next national budget, the MP said 27 per cent will go to education out of which Sh26.3 billion will go to TSC to enable it employ the 26,000 teachers currently serving as interns.

The Teachers’ employ will get more money to employ an extra 20,000 teachers, he said.  The Kiharu MP said his yesterday’s visit to the County was through a request by Nominated Senator George Mbugua.

Nyoro promised funding of tarmacking of Boiman town roads and called for one of the roads to be named after JM Kariuki to honour the assassinated MP for his role in developing Nyandarua.  Nyandarua Woman Rep, Faith Gitau defended the Kiharu MP against allegations that his whirlwind activities were the cause of political trouble in Mt Kenya.

“People are talking a lot about Ndindi Nyoro with some alleging he is the cause of problems in Mt Kenya region. I want to tell them Ndindi is the mouthpiece of the President and his Deputy,” Gitau said.
