Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has been endorsed as the party's presidential candidate in the August 9 general election.

The party's National Executive Committee (NEC) made the announcement on Thursday after a meeting at Chungwa House, Nairobi.

"That it be proposed to the NGC to ratify the decision by NEC that the Orange Democratic Movement formally joins the Azimio la Umoja coalition/coalition party.

"That further the NGC/NDC of the party do propose the Right Hon. Raila Odinga as the presidential candidate for the Azimio la Umoja coalition /party," ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said in a statement.

This comes ahead of a two-day National Delegates Council (NDC) on Friday and Saturday.

Nairobi businessman Jimi Wanjigi had moved to court to challenge the upcoming party NDC saying it was convened irregularly.

Wanjigi, who has since declared his interest in the presidential seat, filed a petition at the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal through his proxies.

In the court documents, he said the party should undergo a nomination process in filling its presidential candidate ahead of the August 9 general election.

"The notice has not included/omitted the agenda item for conduct of the elections to nominate the party's presidential flag bearer after every five years contrary to rule 10 and 18 of the party's nomination rules," Wanjigi said in the court documents.

The court, however, dismissed the case on Wednesday.
