Officer kills colleague, then self over deployment to governor’s residence

There was tension at Nyamira Police Station in Nyamira County after an officer shot his two colleagues before blasting himself to death with an AK47 rifle. One of the colleagues later succumbed at the hospital

The shooter officer, Julius Mdachi who is a police constable at Nyamira Administration Police(AP) line, is said to have accosted two of his seniors, Sub-County Commander Nicanor Odhiambo and Sergeant Amani Ali, at the entrance to the AP quarters where he suddenly opened fire on them, fatally injuring them. He then turned the rifle on himself and blasted his head through the mouth.

The junior officer was allegedly confronting his seniors over an impending deployment to a governor's residence . According to the Nyamira South Deputy Sub County Commander Bernard Too, "the officer suddenly cocked his AK47 rifle and started shooting at his seniors."

He claimed that the constable was dissatisfied with the impending redeployment and he was bitter about the process.

One of the officers who was shot sustained injuries on the right thigh and survived while the other died at Nyamira County Referral Hospital, the shooter officer also died at the same facility.

The AP line quarters are situated near the Nyamira main stage and it took an intervention of traders to ferry the injured officers to hospital by foot.

Bodaboda riders from the nearby Nyamira bus stage took it up to carry the officers by arms to Nyamira County Referral Hospital.
