MANASSEH NYAGA

MANASSEH NYAGA wears many hats. He is a TV presenter, actor, commercial model and a fashion enthusiast. His online presence, and specifically his style, is unique and outstanding. He talks with CHEBET KORIR

When and how did you develop interest in media?

I was born and grew up in Meru town. Growing up, the only radio station we would listen to was KBC English Service. There was a show hosted by John Karani from 11am to 2pm and I loved his voice and energy. I wanted to change my name to John, too, but unfortunately that was not possible. So, I would say that’s where I got my passion for broadcasting.

And how did you discover you had a talent in acting?

During my days at Kanyakine Boys Boarding Primary School, in Meru, I joined the drama club at the age of 12. I participated in three drama competitions in three consecutive years up to the national level and won in 2004 and 2005. Fast forward, I joined the University of Nairobi and studied Public Relations and it was during my campus days that I would hang out at the Kenya National Theatre with a few campus mates. In 2012, one of my mates, Martha Ohenga, told me she was in a TV show called Mheshimiwa. I told her I had an interest in acting, she made a call and I got a role on it and that’s where my professional acting started to take shape.

You also have an impeccable style. How did you discover your fashion forward ethos?

I’ve always been a fashion enthusiast since I was young. I was always neat in school. I once was awarded for being the best dressed student. Since then, my agenda has always been to dress well.

Share your fashion evolution...

I have always wanted to look smart. I made my footing into mainstream fashion modelling at the age of 21 and that marked my point of no return. After joining TV, I had a challenge working with different stylists; I felt not everyone understood my style. So, I decided to do it myself and so far it’s been an incredible journey, they call me #NoStylist.

What is your style secret weapon?

Never shop in retail outlets; they will only make your look common. I love off-the-shelf outfits from the street markets; they are unique and rarely will you find someone else with the same outfit as yours.

When getting dressed, what dictates your look?

This entirely depends on the events of the day. Different events call for a different look. So, I don’t have one specific dress regime.

How does your style reveal your personality and lifestyle?

My style reveals my personality from a point of no limitation. It shows my confidence and boldness. For the lifestyle part, I like to believe it is simple, edgy and classy. But I can describe my style as ‘Anything Goes’.

There must be the biggest mistake men make when shopping or dressing.

Not planning for the shopping ahead. We have to be more intentional. It is also a big turn off when one buys oversized or undersized outfits.

What do you splurge on when shopping?

Shoes and shirts are my weakness.

Item of clothing or accessory you often wear?

A watch and cap.

Do you one most treasured item in your wardrobe?

Yes, I do. My Dior scent. I am in love with it.

Who’s your style icon?

Kanye West. His unpredictable approach to style and fashion leaves me in awe.

If you were to pick on a designer for your wardrobe collection, who would it be?

That would be Zara. Reason being they are very creative with every collection they release and you can easily find anything, from beach to office and casual looks.

What’s the most outrageous piece of fashion advice you have ever received?

That my socks should always match my boxers. Who would I be doing it for anyway?

We’ll never catch you dead wearing?

Safari boots. Ha-ha.
