Gaspo Women may be top of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) table but their coach is not happy.

The team are at the summit of the 15-team table with 63 points, five ahead of second-placed teams Vihiga United and Trans Nzoia Falcons after last weekend’s 1-0 win over Mathare but what is worrying coach Edward Githua is their lack of efficiency in front of goal.

Indeed, out of the top five, Gaspo have scored the least number of goals, having found the back of the net 50 times compared to Vihiga’s 77, Trans Nzoia’s 69, fourth-placed Thika Queens’ 72 and Kisumu All Starlets, who are fifth, having scored 55.

Against Mathare, who are 13th on the log, its was expected that Gaspo might score more but only managed one to Githua’s dislike.

“We picked maximum points but the score line is worrying. The officiating in that encounter was wanting but all the same, my strikers missed sitters and if the trend continues, we will struggle in the remaining matches.

We are working on that as we bank on our experienced players getting their form back as we rely on the youngsters,” said Githua.

Githua’s concerns are not far fetched given they still have to face Thika, Oserian Ladies and holders Vihiga away coupled with home games against Zetech Sparks and Trans Nzoia, matches they must win if they have to lift their first Premier League trophy.

While Gaspo struggle to score, Vihiga have no such troubles and thrashed Wadadia 5-0 to keep their hopes of a third consecutive title alive.

Vihiga’s journey to the title is tougher as they are yet to face Gaspo and Trans Nzoia as well as hard-fighting Kisumu and Oserian. Eldoret Falcons, Makolanders and Zetech Sparks are there other opponents.

Alex Alumira’s Vihiga will this weekend be away to Kisumu and Eldoret on Saturday and Sunday.

“The two teams are serious title contenders and despite the first leg outcomes, we have to be tactically smart to pick doubles against them. The other five matches are equally critical,” said Alumira

Thika also have title ambitions of their own after moving to within two points of second place following a 6-2 thrashing of Trans Nzoia although they have played a match more than the latter and Gaspo and three more than Vihiga.
